How to Safely Unbox and Uncoil Welded Bandsaw Blades

by SIMMONS / 15 October 2026 / Published in Blade Tips
A Simmons' employee uses a box cutter to open a box containing bandsaw blades while taking proper safety measures.

Proper blade handling starts before your bandsaw blade is installed. When unboxing and uncoiling a new welded bandsaw blade, it’s important to use caution because the blade remains under tension and can spring open if handled improperly.

In this video, we’ll demonstrate how to safely remove a welded bandsaw blade from its packaging and prepare it for installation.

Steps for Safely Unboxing a Bandsaw Blade

1. Prepare your work area.

Place the box on a flat, stable surface before opening it. Make sure you’re wearing appropriate protective equipment, like safety glasses and gloves, before handling the blade.

2. Open the box carefully.

Carefully cut the straps or tape securing the box, then remove the blade from its packaging and place it flat on the table.

3. Remove the wire ties.

Maintain a firm grip on the blade as you remove the wire ties holding it in its coiled position. Remember that the blade is still under tension.

4. Carefully uncoil the blade.

Once the wire ties are removed, slowly and carefully unwind the blade while maintaining control of the areas under tension. Perform this part of the process slowly to avoid injury.

5. Prepare the blade for installation.

Once the blade is fully unwound, it should be ready for installation on your bandsaw. Follow the instructions for your specific machine when installing the blade.

Handle Bandsaw Blades with Care

Taking a few precautions when unboxing and uncoiling a welded bandsaw blade can help make the process safer and more straightforward.
