Maximize Foam Cutting Efficiency with Simmons’ CNC Blades

by Andrew Noonan / 27 setembro 2024 / Published in Uncategorized

Raise your hand if your business uses contour-cutting machines to cut patterns of all shapes and sizes into foam. Now, raise your other hand if you need blades for your contour-cutting machines. If one or both hands are raised right now, you’re in the right place. You should maybe feel a little silly, but you’re in the right place.

When it comes to contour cutting, the right CNC blade can make all the difference in the quality of your end product. Simmons Knife & Saw manufactures a range of CNC blades with various edge types specifically designed to meet the demands of your foam-cutting operations, no matter the application.

Versatile CNC Blades for Diverse Cutting Operations

We understand that different machines and projects require different blade setups. That’s why we offer cut-to-length CNC blades for oscillating machinery and welded CNC band blades for continuous band saws.

Offering CNC blades in these formats and in various edge types allows us to cater to a diverse range of foam-cutting needs and ensures that we have the right cutting solution for any customer. You can click the links below to learn more about each of our available edge types:

  • Knife Edge
  • Micro-A
  • Razorback
  • V-Tooth
  • V-Tooth Flat

Choosing the Right CNC Blade for Foam Cutting

Choosing the optimal CNC blade for your foam-cutting operation depends on the type of foam and how aggressive a cutting action is needed.

For instance, if you’re cutting through low-density foam like flexible polyurethane, you’ll likely be fine with an edge type that provides a gentle slicing action, like the Knife Edge or 24 TPI V-Tooth blade. As a side note, Knife Edge CNC blades are also ideal for cutting non-woven fabrics, textiles, and other fabric-based materials.

On the flip side, if you’re cutting more dense foams like viscoelastic or polyethylene foam, you may be better off using a toothed CNC blade like the Micro-A, V-Tooth, or V-Tooth Flat. Each of those blades will provide a more aggressive cut than the Knife Edge while still keeping material waste and dust to a minimum.

Side note: If you find your blades are wearing out too quickly, Simmons can harden the edge of your blades, which will extend blade life and retain a sharp cutting edge for a longer period of time. This option is available for all of Simmons’ CNC blades.

Most of Simmons’ customers manage to find success using one of our previously mentioned blades/edge types. However, if you’re cutting through particularly dense foam or other applications like cork, we recommend giving Simmons’ newest offering, DuraBand CNC blades, a try. DuraBand CNC blades are made from specialized steel and designed with maximum durability in mind. Not only do these blades last longer compared to other carbon variants of steel, but they retain their sharpness for longer as well, making them an excellent option if you find your blades wearing out too quickly.

Please consult your sales manager to find out which CNC blade makes the most sense for your contour-cutting operations.

Cutting Applications Our CNC Blades Can Handle

Whether you’re working with soft materials like PU foam or more challenging materials like viscoelastic foam, Simmons’ blades will provide the clean, precise cuts you need every time. Take a look at some of the most common materials our CNC blades are used to cut below.

  • PU flexible foams
  • Viscoelastic (memory) foam
  • Technical foams
  • Recycled materials
  • PE, composite foam, and mineral wool
  • Non-woven fabrics, textiles, fiber materials
  • Even rigid foams and cork in exceptional cases

Don’t see your application listed? Don’t worry yet. Contact us today to see if we have experience with cutting operations like yours. After more than 75 years of manufacturing blades, it’s highly likely we do.
