V-Tooth Flat

Choosing the Right CNC Blade for Foam Cutting

Choosing the optimal CNC blade for your foam-cutting operation depends on the type of foam and how aggressive a cutting action is needed.

For instance, if you’re cutting through low-density foam like flexible polyurethane, you’ll likely be fine with an edge type that provides a gentle slicing action, like the Knife Edge or 24 TPI V-Tooth blade. As a side note, Knife Edge CNC blades are also ideal for cutting non-woven fabrics, textiles, and other fabric-based materials.

On the flip side, if you’re cutting more dense foams like viscoelastic or polyethylene foam, you may be better off using a toothed CNC blade like the Micro-A, V-Tooth, or V-Tooth Flat. Each of those blades will provide a more aggressive cut than the Knife Edge while still keeping material waste and dust to a minimum.

Side note: If you find your blades are wearing out too quickly, Simmons can harden the edge of your blades, which will extend blade life and retain a sharp cutting edge for a longer period of time. This option is available for all of Simmons’ CNC blades.

Most of Simmons’ customers manage to find success using one of our previously mentioned blades/edge types. However, if you’re cutting through particularly dense foam or other applications like cork, we recommend giving Simmons’ newest offering, DuraBand CNC blades, a try. DuraBand CNC blades are made from specialized steel and designed with maximum durability in mind. Not only do these blades last longer compared to other carbon variants of steel, but they retain their sharpness for longer as well, making them an excellent option if you find your blades wearing out too quickly.
